Public Architecture

Designing Spaces that Serve Communities, Today and Tomorrow.

Public Services Overview

Public buildings and spaces have to respond to more than one brief. They must balance the needs of organisations, communities, users, budgets, regulations and the places they belong to.

We begin by listening. Through consultation and collaboration, we bring different requirements together and translate them into practical, enduring architecture that communities can use and value for years to come.

Every public project brings together a different mix of users and stakeholders. We have experience working with councils, iwi, staff, students, funders, developers, tenants, boards, contractors, operators and the wider public.

NB Architects has the breadth of perspectives within our own team. We understand that different groups use and experience places in different ways, and we bring that awareness into the design process to create places that work exceptionally well.

Our most recent public project is the Timaru Theatre Royal refurbishment and South Canterbury Museum Te Kura Marumaru and Laneway projects. We worked closely with Timaru District Council, the staff for each entity, the construction project managers and, of course, the public users.

We listen to every perspective

Public projects involve many voices. We take the time to understand different users, stakeholders and priorities, then bring them together into a clear design response.

We understand how people use places

Our broad project experience helps us consider a space from many perspectives — from everyday users and staff to operators, funders, councils and contractors.

We balance ambition with practicality

Good public design needs to be inspiring, but it also needs to work. We balance design quality with budgets, technical requirements, durability, accessibility and long-term use.
