Laneway Stafford to Barnard Street

The public laneway creates a key urban connection between Stafford Street and Barnard Street, alongside the restored Theatre Royal and new South Canterbury Museum. Collaborative design by Architect; Leon Browning, and Landscape Architect; Kirsten Wilson. The laneway is a flexible civic space supporting outdoor dining, events, public gatherings and future hospitality or retail activity, encouraging people to linger and engage throughout the day and evening.

The design also integrates the operational requirements of the Theatre Royal, including access for rigid trucks delivering stage sets to the loading dock. Careful geometry, turning movements and gradients accommodate these functions without compromising the laneway’s public character.

Hardscape, seating and planting draw inspiration from South Canterbury’s diverse ecosystems, including alpine grasslands, shrublands, wetlands, forests and coastal dunes. These elements strengthen the laneway’s connection to place while supporting the Museum’s wider cultural and educational programmes.

Design drawings and details were developed in collaboration with DLA Architects to meet the compressed deadline required by the client; Timaru District Council in 2025. Construction began in 2026.
