Project Overview
Claremont Road, South Canterbury
Set on the outskirts of Timaru, Claremont Road House is conceived as a warm and enduring retreat that draws from the rugged rural character of South Canterbury. The home takes on a lodge-like sensibility — robust and grounded, yet open and inviting.
Bolstered bluestone walls and dark-stained timber cladding anchor the building into its landscape, while exposed structural steel elements introduce a quiet honesty, celebrating the construction and providing subtle contrast to the surrounding natural materials.
Inside, raked timber ceilings follow the roofline, creating a generous sense of height and light that opens the living spaces to the north. These areas extend seamlessly onto terraces that capture sunlight throughout the day and frame long views across the surrounding countryside.
At the heart of the home lies a covered courtyard — a sheltered outdoor room that becomes the central gathering space. It offers a sense of enclosure and calm while allowing the changing light, air, and seasonal atmosphere to permeate the interior.
Claremont Road House balances solidity with openness, and texture with light — a contemporary expression of rural architecture that feels timeless and deeply connected to its place.
