South Canterbury Museum – Te Kura Marumaru

The South Canterbury Museum – Te Kura Marumaru project is a significant civic and cultural development being delivered as part of the wider Theatre Royal and Museum precinct redevelopment in central Timaru. The project involves the design and construction of a new purpose-built museum facility on Barnard Street, creating a modern and flexible home for South Canterbury’s historic collections, exhibitions, education programmes, and community activities.
The new facility has been designed to support a broad range of cultural, educational, and community functions, including a large permanent exhibition gallery, flexible education and event spaces, and a dedicated gallery for rotating local and travelling exhibitions.

Design drawings and details were developed in collaboration with DLA Architects to meet the compressed deadline required by the client; Timaru District Council in 2025. Construction began in 2026.
