Project Synopsis: Recycled Materials Small Cabin Home Office

Architectural designer Josh Newlove conceptualised and built a sustainable, functional home office, offering a dedicated workspace with scenic views of Mt Peel, located close to his main residence. Designed to serve as a versatile and cost-effective solution, the project emphasizes eco-friendly construction, utilising recycled materials sourced from Trade Me, Marketplace, and existing structures.

The cabin was built entirely by Josh himself, with a focus on sustainability and creativity. Key features include recycled cladding from a damaged building, windows from the old Crow’s Nest, and a large macrocarpa slab used for the desk, all contributing to a reduced environmental footprint. Despite the use of recycled materials, the space is fully insulated, with exposed rafters and a continuous beam from inside to out, ensuring durability and quality.

Measuring under 10 square meters, the cabin was constructed without the need for formal consent, adhering to building codes. The design incorporates modern amenities such as Wi-Fi and power, making it suitable for remote work or other uses like a sleep-out or additional living space for a growing family. The project was completed at an estimated cost of around $5,000, excluding Josh’s labor.

Positioned conveniently near the main house, the cabin provides a quiet environment for focused work, balancing functionality with sustainability. Josh’s tips for replicating this project include keeping the footprint small, sourcing recycled materials, and carefully choosing a location that allows easy access to power and Wi-Fi while offering serenity for concentration.

This project exemplifies sustainable building practices, cost-efficiency, and creative design, highlighting how small-scale structures can serve as valuable and versatile additional spaces within home environments.
