Set in Otipua — an anagram of utopia — not far from Timaru, this modest home demonstrates how architecture can quietly support life rather than compete with its surroundings. Visitors often remark first on the setting, reflecting a design intentionally focused on the livability of the whole property rather than the house alone.

The initial concept was carefully crafted by owners, Phil & Christine, using their knowledge in solar energy and sustainable living. The home draws inspiration from New Zealand’s DOC huts. Though architecturally simple, it carefully achieves ambitious environmental outcomes through both passive and active solar systems, alongside onsite freshwater and wastewater management that allows the property to operate almost entirely off-grid.

Collaboration between owner and NB Architects was a key step in bringing Phil and Christine’s vision to fruition, with Phil describing the design journey with NB Architects as effortless — “nothing was ever a problem.” With a footprint of just 100 square metres, the home feels larger with it’s connection to outdoor living. A sheltered deck becomes the primary gathering space, while the building is precisely positioned to capture sunlight, views, and easy movement across the site — elevated at one end and seamlessly connected to patio and lawn at the other.

More than a house, the project reflects a philosophy guided by nature — supporting wellbeing, sustainability, and joy.
