Hard surfaces are a key part of many outdoor spaces — guiding movement, creating gathering areas, and defining layout. Whether it’s a residential entry path, a market courtyard, a beer garden, or a staff break area, hardscapes need to be both practical and well-integrated with the wider landscape.
While concrete and asphalt are widely used, they come with high embodied energy and poor end-of-life recyclability. That’s why I encourage clients to reduce the total area of hardscape where possible, and explore more sustainable alternatives.
Hardscapes also increase runoff, which can strain stormwater systems. In urban areas, Councils like TDC now require property owners to manage and attenuate stormwater on-site — often through water tanks or rain gardens. I can help you plan for both beauty and compliance.
