Timaru Theatre Royal

The Theatre Royal Restoration project is a major civic and cultural redevelopment focused on the seismic strengthening, restoration, and modernisation of Timaru’s historic Theatre Royal precinct. Located prominently on Stafford Street within the Timaru town centre, the project seeks to preserve and reinvigorate one of the district’s most significant heritage and performing arts facilities while creating a contemporary, flexible, and financially sustainable community asset for future generations.

The project involves the careful seismic strengthening and refurbishment of the existing heritage theatre, alongside substantial extensions to the northern and western facades to improve both front-of-house and back-of-house functionality. The redevelopment includes upgraded foyer and hospitality spaces, improved accessibility and circulation, expanded patron amenities, modernised performer facilities, and enhanced operational infrastructure to support a broader range of community and commercial uses.

Design drawings and details were developed in collaboration with DLA Architects to meet the compressed deadline required by the client; Timaru District Council in 2025. Construction began in 2026.
